Ok, so out of the blue I've had this a great original idea that would be totally suitable for a short (unusual really considering I'm a composer.. but ah well).

So, I'm currently writing the script, but leaving it mainly to a friend. What other things do I need to start doing... I've heard talk of treatments? What do I need to start thinking about?

Also, after lurking on this forum for about 3 years it is an understatement that film is better if we can get it than say DV shot on a canon XL1... however as this is my first real short, am I aiming too high? Its just that I think this is a a really good concept and don't want someone to watch it thinking it was ok, but could have looked better!

Need advice!
Thanks
Rob

In all honesty, the web is your best friend, so if you get the picture good enough for browsers you should be fine picture-wise.

Chances are it won't ever get blown up to film.

I'm just uploading our (mine and Despins) last short film to my webspace, so when it's done I'll post a link and you can check it out.

I think it looks more than fine and it was shot on an XM2 with some filters, lighting and a w/a lense.

i wouldn?t shoot on film for your first film - i wouldn?t even do a feature for your first film (but then i don?t know if your making a short or a feature)

Digital if used right can look really good, ive recently seen cameras in the same range as the XL2 that shoot at 24fps so that would be worth looking at.

I wouldn?t worry about writing a treatment unless your looking for founding, or trying to sell it somewhere.

Once you've written and re-written your script story board it (very important) and generally plan it - I advise MoivePlanner (free software - google it)

Can you give us an out line of your concept? Just out of curiosity

What you need to do is structure the thing before hand. Let's say if the idea/concept you have is a grandma jumping of a roof because her cat said DR Phil told him to tell her. You need to know the order of the things that happen, and where to place the events to make as much impact as possible and convey your idea as good as possible.

The events in the granda thing are:

Grandma leaving the cat
cat home alone, watching tv
cat watching dr phil
dr phil talking to the cat, saying that the cats grandma should jump
grandma coming home
cat vs grandma
cat telling her that she should jump
grandma in disbelief
grandma jumping

Since it's a short I tend to go with twists at the end. Too bad I've chosen such a bad example and can't really go on, but you need to know for yourself what works the best. Writing intentions/problems in those small sentenced structeres works well too and you can write some sort of poem. I'm going to try for funs sake.

Dear old Granny Gram's jumped off a 12 storey roof
People on the street found her and were agoof
Why would she do something like that?
Dear old Granny Gram's, leaving her sweet cat?
Cops and neighbors scimmed through her home
Looking for answers for their condone
All they found was the cat in front of the TV
Telling the cops no it wasn't me
It was DR Phill I tell you, through the TV

You know. Fuck you.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeh cool advice from emjen and brooks, cheers.

I am *thinking* about trying to possibly get a little bit of funding (good luck I hear ye cry!) but I think the treatment could be really good. So we'll see there.

Obviously planning to storyboard! The key to the concept is partly in the look of the film.

And the story of the film... well, you'd probably either think it totally stupid, or ingeniously clever or neither.. I would tell you... but I'd have to kill you
